Parenting Forum: Speech and Language Development

Discover how babies learn to communicate and speak to you. Learn the major milestones of speech and language development during the first two years of life. Find out what you can do to help your child’s communicative development. The speakers will also discuss how babies can use sign language and the effect of introducing a second language to your child. Co-sponsored by Childbirth Education Association of Seattle (CEAS).

Asthma Power for Parents
This class is for parents and caregivers of children with asthma. We will discuss what happens in the lungs when your child’s asthma flares up and how to care for your child at home. Topics also include asthma triggers, common medications and treatments, and how to work with your child’s school or day care. This class will be taught by nurse practitioners from the Pulmonary department and a pharmacist from Children’s Hospital.

Signing With Your Baby
Babies can communicate before they can speak! American Sign Language can be used with babies who can hear to help them communicate. Learn words and techniques to meet your baby’s needs and reduce frustration for both of you. Class designed for babies who are about 7 to 14 months of age. Babies are welcome or optional. Babysafe
This newly revised safety class is for new and expectant parents and others who care for infants. Topics include infant development, baby safety, injury prevention and care of common injuries. Infant CPR is demonstrated and practiced.

Time:   Weekdays, 6:30–9:30 p.m. or Saturdays, 9:30 a.m.–12:30 p.m.

Infant and Child CPR
This CPR class is designed for child care providers, health care providers, parents and others. Topics include risk factors, healthy heart living, infant and child CPR and choking rescue techniques.

Attendees receive an American Heart Association Pediatric Basic Life Support Certificate.

Children’s Better Babysitters
Youth 11–13 years of age learn responsible babysitting including basic child development, infant care, safety, how to handle emergencies, age-appropriate toys, business hints and parent expectations. Choking rescue demonstrated.

Time:   Saturdays, 9 a.m.–3 p.m.
Fee:   $25 per person

CPR for Babysitters
This CPR class is for youth ages 11–15 who have completed a babysitting course. Topics include safety risk factors, healthy heart living, infant/child CPR and treatment of choking. Each student receives an American Heart Association participation card. This class is co-sponsored by CEAS.

Growing Up: For Girls Only
This two-part series for parent/guardian and daughter (ages 9–11, 4th and 5th grades) focuses on physical changes of puberty and menstruation, what girls need to know about boys, social issues and sexuality. Using lectures, videos, group activities and humor, the sessions emphasize family values and communication.

Growing Up: For Boys Only
This two-part series for parent/guardian and son (ages 10–13), focuses on what each can expect as boys begin adolescence. It covers body changes during puberty, popular myths about growing up, behavior and attitude changes, girls and how to communicate about the experience of adolescence.

Perspectives: Strategies and Skills for Teens and Parents/Guardians
A class for girls who are in middle school (ages 12–14) and a parent or guardian created by the faculty of our popular Growing Up: For Girls Only. This class takes off where Growing Up: For Girls Only ends, focusing on strategies for building healthy relationships, decision-making and confidence in the face of the challenges and pressures of teen life.

Sibshops are award-winning programs for brothers and sisters of kids with special needs. Children’s offers two Sibshops, one for siblings of kids with special health concerns and one for siblings of kids with developmental needs. Each Sibshop has two age groups: 6–9 and 10–13. Pre-registration and payment are required for all classes. Call (206) 789-2306 to register using a credit card or to have a registration form mailed to you. No one will be denied admission if unable to pay the full amount. Class locations will be sent with confirmation. Registration, less $10 for processing, will be refunded for cancellations received at least three working days before the class. These classes are popular and often fill up several months in advance.

2002 Starting Point: Resource Guide for Children with Special Health Needs
The 2002 Starting Point guide is here! Starting Point is a free guide to services and information for Washington families who have a child with special health needs. The guide also includes tips from parents on how to get help. The guide is produced by the Center for Children with Special Needs, a program of Children’s. This new Fact Sheet shows pictures of the type of child products recalled for safety reasons by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission and provides information on the type of injuries that can result from recalled products. It includes national and Washington state statistics and explains how to check for recalled products.
